Whether it’s rain, wind, hail, or snow, a heavy storm can wreak havoc on the roofing of any building. While nothing can stop the forces of Mother Nature, residents can protect their homes by recognizing the most common ways a heavy storm can do damage.

At Carey Roofing, we know that storm damage can be brutal. If a client’s roof has been damaged by a heavy storm, we can help assess and fix the damage.

The most common damages to homes caused by heavy storms are:

  1. Hail Stones: Hail can cause severe damage to the roofs of homes. Hailstone size ranges from the size of a penny to the size of a baseball. They also vary in hardness and shape. These factors all contribute to the amount of damage hail causes upon impact. Hail creates indentations on the roof which may not always be visible to the untrained eye. That is why it is important to have your roof inspected after a heavy storm.

  2. Heavy Rain: Many roofs have a granular surface which can be washed away by heavy rains and flooding. Rain can also seep under any damaged seals on the roof. If the water from the rain freezes, any roofing material may crack or expand, causing further damage.

  3. Severe Winds: Strong winds have been known to blow shingles off of roofs. Missing shingles leaves the underlayment of the roof exposed to the elements. Rain can cause water damage and rot, which would eventually lead to water leaking into a home. Shingles are held by a sealing strip that is also susceptible to wind damage. A broken seal can lead to water going under the shingles and causing mold to form.

It is important to know that when storm season comes along, a roof is easily exposed to damage. If you're worried about any damage to your roof, our team at Carey Roofing would be glad to come out and inspect it. Contact us today and we can get started.
